Driven by Passion...

For many people, their car is an object of mystery and they are frightened of touching anything because they simply have no idea about what they are doing. This means that a lot of people pay to have basic maintenance undertaken, even if it’s something as simple as changing a headlight bulb.

However it’s vital to perform a few checks on your car every now and then, as well as to give it a bit of TLC, as this will avoid unnecessary and potentially very expensive repair costs. That’s why over the last few weeks we have been conducting a Car Care Q&A, giving our readers the opportunity to ask us questions about their car so that they can gain a little bit of confidence.

My car is making a strange noise, what should I do?

To cut a long story short, the best course of action here is to take it to a garage and have a mechanic give it a once-over. It could turn out to be nothing at all, but more often than not, a strange noise indicates that something is not quite right.

Before you get it checked, take a look around the car and try to identify the source of the noise. It could be anything ranging from an under pressured tyre which causes your car to rattle, to your radiator overheating and boiling the coolant mixture within the engine compartment.

What happens if my car breaks down and I can’t get it to a garage?

Many car insurance providers in the UK also provide a recovery option. However, if you didn’t choose this option then you will need to get your car recovered. You can join organisations such as the AA and RAC on the spot, and they will tow your car either home or to a nearby recommended garage. It won’t be cheap, but the benefit of being towed to a secure location far outweigh the risks of leaving a car at the side of the road for a prolonged period.

What regular checks should I be doing?

Oil – Check the oil is at the correct level between the two marks or notches on the dipstick.

Water – Keep it topped up.

Tyres – Check your car’s manual to see what PSI they should be running at.

Wipers – Check your wiper blades are working properly to reduce the risk of an accident in the rain. Ensure screenwash is topped up too.

Between MOTs, take your car in to a local reputable garage and have it serviced. It only costs about £100 but is one of the best ways to keep your car running well for as long as possible.

Why do people cover their windscreens in the winter?

Covering your windscreen during the freezing nights in winter will make your life that little bit easier in the morning. It prevents ice from setting on your windscreen, which can take time to scrape off.

What do the lights on my dashboard mean?

All cars are different, but generally the illuminations on your dashboard will be universally recognisable. To be sure about what particular light could mean, refer to your car’s owner’s manual, or read this post about dashboard warning lights.

That’s all for the first Car Care Q&A. If we receive good feedback from you guys then we will certainly bring you another edition in the not-so-distant future. Just be sure to keep contacting us with your car-related queries.
